Joey's smile makeover
It's not only cats and dogs that our veterinarians treat. Sometimes, our native furry friends need a helping hand too!
Joey's smile makeover
Joey was brought to us by a passionate and dedicated wildlife carer after sustaining an injury to her lower front teeth, making it difficult for her to feed properly.
This adorable female, red-necked wallaby weighed just 1.1 kg and quickly stole the hearts of our team!
Joey came into care after her mum was tragically hit by a car. Her carer became concerned when she noticed Joey was struggling to feed and discovered significant damage to her lower front teeth.
Our resident dental guru, Dr Michelle, carefully anaesthetised Joey and performed dental radiographs to assess her teeth and jaw for any fractures below the gumline. Thankfully, the radiographs showed no obvious fractures, giving us the green light to try to save her tiny teeth.
Using a dental bur, Dr Michelle carefully filed the damaged teeth to create a smooth, level surface. This will help Joey grip grass and feed more comfortably while her teeth continue to regrow.
Following her procedure, Joey was returned to her dedicated carer to receive some well-deserved TLC. We're delighted to report that she was soon able to feed comfortably again.
Joey will spend at least the next six months in care before being gradually released back into the wild. In the meantime, she will join other red-necked joeys and grow up in her own mob. When the time comes for their release, they will be returned to the wild together. This helps reduce stress and provides the safety and security of a familiar group as they navigate their new surroundings.
We look forward to seeing Joey's adorable smile again in a few weeks when she returns for her recheck with Dr Michelle!
